Jason Botkin’s Colorful Murals and Insallations

Montreal-based artist Jason Botkin recently returned from Cancun, Mexico, where he created a series of murals and installations for the second annual Festival Internacional de Arte Publico, a week of art making that took place at the end of February. In collaboration with Jeremy Shantz, Botkin created a series of humorous, mask-like pieces with movable features that viewers could reconfigure a la Mr. Potato Head. Public engagement and collaboration are at the heart of Botkin's whimsical work. He is a co-founder of the collective En Masse, which invites its members to co-create sprawling monochromatic murals. Though Botkin's painting style has an instantly recognizable palette and texture, he has no problem adapting his aesthetic to work with that of other artists. Today we take a look at his pieces from FIAP as well as some other recent work.

Drawing in talent from all over the world, the Life is Beautiful Festival recently wrapped up in Las Vegas. The event brings together many different art forms and aspects of culture, such as music and food, but the street art installations are at the forefront of the festival. Its outdoor gallery, curated by Charlotte Dutoit of Justkids, takes over 15 blocks of the city. Life is Beautiful is now in it's second year, returning with the addition of a few new twists including an abandoned motel that houses 6 separate installations, each done on an impressive scale.

Bordalo II Creates Lively Animal Portraits Using Trash and Found Objects

Based in Lisbon, Portugal, Bordalo II creates resourceful assemblages out of the junk he collects in his city's streets. Using a bit of spray paint, the artist configures the found objects into playful animal portraits. His street art work hybridizes muralism and sculpture. A portrait of an owl conceals layers of scrap metal; a painting of an apple contains bent bicycle tires, cans, wood and cardboard. Bordalo II's art brings whimsical visions to Lisbon's streets and invites viewers to imagine creative ways to reuse their discarded items.

Forest for the Trees Festival Brings 19 New Murals to Portland

Despite some drizzly weather, Portland is looking a little more colorful this week. As of August 24th, the nonprofit mural festival Forest for the Trees, previously covered here, has been in high gear as 29 international artists work their magic on buildings across the city. The festival is co-directed by local artist Gage Hamilton and gallerist Matt Wagner of Hellion Gallery in Portland, who wanted to expand on their city's visual identity through art. For its third year in a row, the project has a goal of creating 19 collaborative new murals.

Cannon Dill Paints His Largest Mural to Date in Oakland

Cannon Dill (previously featured here) recently completed his largest mural to date in Oakland, California. The mural is a part of the Artist Initiative Project that features murals by local artists, curated by bay area gallery Athen B. Gallery and VSCO. Dill's is located on the side of an office that provides services to people renting and buying homes, which inspired him to create a sense of community.
