The Wire Mesh Sculptures of SeungMo Park

SeungMo Park cuts and manipulates layers of wire mesh into absorbing scenes. In recent bodies of work, the artist creates illusionary installations and sculptures that viewers can pass through. Elsewhere, the artist does fiberglass lifecasting with aluminum wire wrapping.

“His aim is to construct scenes that transcend existence,” says Berlin gallery Magic Beans. “The artist enacts a way of seeing beyond what is real and visible. Each piece is several inches thick and each plane that forms the final image is spaced a few finger widths apart, giving the portraits a depth and dimensionality that is difficult to convey in a photograph. In real life, they have an overwhelming presence and are hauntingly evocative – as if caught in between reality and a parallel universe. The dynamics in perception reflect the artist´s conviction that there is no essence to be captured.”

Attaboy's "Cradle of Life" installation, which premiered at the “Art of the Mushroom” group show at Compound Gallery last year, is now headed to the the LA Art Show on Jan. 23-27. It will be part of the Littletopia section of the event. The Hi-Fructose co-founder designed the work as rideable, and as you can see below, revelers at the Compound Gallery events took him up on the opportunity.
German artist Tobias Rehberger's work is all about illusion. His installations transform rooms into Op Art-inspired, immersive environments that trick the eye. Criss-crossing, black and white patterns flatten the three-dimensional spaces, confusing his viewers' sense of depth with busy patterns that continue from floor to ceiling. Rehberger's sculptures are similarly entrancing with their bright colors and geometric forms. Though abstract at a first glance, many of his works cast shadows that form textual messages, adding another dimension of experience to the pieces.
British artist Darren Cullen recently erected a pop-up shop called "Pocket Money Loans" in London that claims to offer fast, high-interest loans to kids ages three and older. The pseudo store is a satirical art installation that criticizes exploitative payday loan companies that offer extremely short-term loans at unreasonable interest rates, driving many unwitting customers into debt in the UK.
Mark Dean Veca, one of the featured artists in “Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose,” created a new installation for the exhibition’s final stop at Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. The absorbing, surreal “Maddest Hatter” greets visitors straight out of the elevator at the museum. In an Instagram video, the artist guides viewers through the completed installation.
