Kelly Tunstall, Ferris Plock Share ‘My Monsters’ at Stranger Factory

“My Monsters,” a new show at Stranger Factory in Albuquerque, collects creatures painted by artist couple Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock. The mixed-media paintings from the San Francisco duo are both individual and collaborative efforts, each’s distinctive style carrying humor, whimsy, and otherworldly creatures. Materials include acrylics, spraypaint, pencil, ink, gold leaf, and other, less conventional tools.

“[The show] is a new series of 2d works that transition from sketchy to highly detailed paint strokes exploding with bright vivid colors,” a statement says. “Their complementary illustration style brings to life an alter dimensional world of imagined archetypal creatures that appear friendly at first glance. Tunstall’s confident female characters explore this adventure filled with brightly armored, multi-faced challengers.”

In their current show "Trash Talk" at Thinkspace Projects, interventionists Jaune and Slinkachu offer new solo pieces and collaborative works. Jaune, last mentioned on HiFructose.com here, is known for his tiny, stenciled sanitation workers that toy with scale and humor throughout city streets. Slinkachu (last featured here) uses everyday objects as vessels for his own small characters in unexpected dioramas. This show runs through June 22 at the space.

Ferris Plock and Kelly Tunstall offer collaborative and solo works in their new show at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, where they're based. "PMA," which stands for "Positive Mental Attitude," applies their vibrant characters and patterns to their viewpoint of the changing city (or “living beast,” as they refer to it) around them. The show runs through Dec. 20 at the space. In their collaborative mode, the pair becomes "KeFe."

Mexico-born artist Salvador Jiménez-Flores uses several approaches to delve into identity and the convergence of cultures. A recent project in particular, titled "The Resistance of the Hybrid Cacti," uses ceramics to look at these concepts and more. The artist says that “through art, I seek to resist the labels put upon me and other people of color by reimagining what an alternative future could look like.”
