On View: “Cruel Summer” Curated by Roger Gastman at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Currently on view at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York City is "Cruel Summer," an extensive showcase of artists with ties to the international graffiti and street art scenes. The show is curated by Roger Gastman, a graffiti writer turned filmmaker and author whose extensive credits include consulting producer of Banksy's Exit Through the Giftshop and co-curator of the major street art exhibition "Art in the Streets" at LA's MoCA. With humorous, playful works by Dabs Myla, Finok and HuskMitNavn, neon dreamscapes by Maya Hayuk and POSE and black-and-white flash tattoo drawings by Mike Giant, the exhibition demonstrates the broad scope of artists making their marks on the streets of cities across the world.

Urban Spree Gallery in Berlin is now making preparations for their huge street art show opening September 18th, “DUBL TRUBL”. Curated by artist Dscreet, the exhibition will boast 80 names you might be familiar with- Miss Van & Ciro, Ghostpatrol & Merda, Lush & Dscreet, Tizer & Ebot, Anthony Lister, Dabs and Myla, Pure Evil, and many more. The project is aptly named in anticipation of ‘doubling up’ artists who will be collaborating in addition to showing new work. We previously reviewed Miss Van and Ciro’s collaborative work last September, making this an anniversary of sorts. The artists in this show are paired because of their clashing styles, rather than similarities, celebrating the spontaneity and improvisation that comes with collaboration. It’s always fun when artists who don't normally work together join efforts.
Denmark based artist Rune Christensen tells stories in the tattoos and printed clothing of his decorated figures. As a self taught painter with a graffiti background, Christensen is well traveled and has collected his visual inspiration from all over the world. He sources his motifs from the iconography and textiles of cultures including Asian, South American, North African and Native American. Christensen's portraits of women, men and children are simple in composition and palette, yet complex is the depiction of their symbolism which has layered meaning.
The "Colorado crush" is a well known name among graffiti festivals, celebrating Denver’s vibrant art scene time and time again. Now in its sixth year, a new crop of incredible installations have hit the Denver area. Among them is Max Kauffman’s, in which the artist covered an entire house. "My work for the last few years has been going deeper and deeper into an architectural realm, inspired by concepts of house versus home, of sanctuary, of solace from the chaos of the world around us."
Hailing from the outskirts of Sao Paulo, Brazil, L7M began making art as a child. Spray paint, his preferred medium for street art, entered his life at the age of 13, and he quickly became proficient in it while also experimenting with china ink, latex, pastel, and acrylic. Currently, L7M spends his time traveling the world to paint murals that feature birds fractured into a flurry of colors and abstract shapes. Neon colors dominate his compositions, with varied styles of paint strokes that add depth to the abstract color fields. Recently, L7M traveled around Europe to put up new pieces. Take a look at his new street work as well as a few paintings from his studio below.
