The Surreal Paintings of Chris Austin

In Chris Austin's surreal paintings, the overlooked giants of the ocean make their way across landscapes and suburban settings. His recent show with Antler Gallery, titled “Unfamiliar,” offered new work from the artist, who often focuses on the elegance and plight of nature and its inhabitants.

“His work utilizes a surrealist vision of the natural world to tell stories about significant encounters and incidents. A little girl in a yellow rain slicker stands in for the viewer in several works, bearing witness to levitating sharks and orcas as they move through the woods. The inexplicable nature of these scenes draws us into a world out of kilter, its central figures displaced, and ask us to reflect on our own assumptions about the natural order of things.”

In his depictions of the everyday, Arcmanoro Niles recalls traditional figurative painting while subverting in his choice of hues and glitter—and also introducing strange characters into the scenes dubbed "seekers." These characters offer new insight and disruption to the people he pulls from his own life.
Zin Lim paints sculpted bodies and faces with twinkling eyes before wiping them away with textured paint strokes. While the San Francisco-based artist began his career painting classical nude figures, his work has grown increasingly abstract over the years. Lim leaves just enough figurative details in each piece to give viewers a relatable entry point into the image. The human characters' presence guides us through the expressionistic markings the dominate the rest of the canvas.

Luca Ledda’s surreal works deal with both our conception of the world and our consumption of its resources. The Turin artist offers these scenes in murals and gallery work across the globe. Recent projects include pieces in Belgium, Mexico, Bosnia, and beyond.

The colorful works of Hawaii native Ekundayo (HF Vol. 9) combine surrealism with influences from his graffiti days. His paintings sometimes lean on the nightmarish, as in his portrayal of anthropomorphic subjects in haunting scenes. On Saturday, he will debut a new series with "Collective Reflections" at Thinkspace gallery in Los Angeles. Ekundayo describes his solo as a "gift to that feeling I know we all connect to when reaching deep within ourselves." Check out our preview after the jump!
