After working solely in graphite, the artist has recently expanded to add more oil painting to her repertoire, often portraying romantic images of birds and flowers. Her technique shares sensibilities with Chinese bird-and-flower painting, where subjects can be compared to almost all thoughts and feelings of a person. They can symbolize feminine beauty, virtues, and omens. Inspired by mythological themes, Foley also adds symbolic meaning to her pieces. In her painting of a kingfisher, for instance, she portrays a father kingfisher who stole a flaming arrow from the gods. Viewers can read more about the stories behind her works at her blog.

There’s a wild energy to Jon Fox’s work, present even when subjects stand still and stare at the viewer. With Fox’s oil paintings, specifically, the works burst and crack in defiance against the medium. And in each corner, a symphony of apparitions, with Japanese, geometric, and otherworldly influences, offers a new entry point.
Netherlands based Joram Roukes and Los Angeles based Joanne Nam are two artists who look to nature for their inspiration, but in strikingly different ways. Previously featured on our blog, Joram Roukes's inspiration generally comes from elements of animals, which he combines with his everyday experiences in a collage-like way. Joanne Nam, whom we featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 29, however looks at it through the filter of her childhood, spent growing up near forests. They each debuted a new series at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles last Saturday night, Roukes with "American Ornithology, and Nam with "Hiatus".
Illustrator Zoe Keller's absorbing, hyperdetailed odes to the natural world are rendered in graphite and ink. The Portland-based artist uses landscapes, field guides, and her own memories to source the varied flora and fauna that appear in her works. The artist says that she blends "hints of narrative" into her natural explorations.
Kevin Peterson is a Houston-based oil painter recognized for scenes in which wild animals and children interact against urban backdrops. One Peterson piece, "Coalition II," was recently used as the cover for the newest Red Hot Chili Peppers record, "The Getaway." The artist’s third solo exhibition with Thinkspace Gallery, "Sovereign," runs through Sept. 10. Peterson last appeared on HiFructose.com here.
