KAABOO launched KAABOO ArtworK this past September with an art and music 'mix-perience' at the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds. The event featured live mural painting, intricate sculpture installations and unique exhibitions by dozens of artists esteemed worldwide, in addition to comedy, fashion, beauty and craft beer events. The ArtworK gallery, curated by San Francisco-based artist and KAABOO Art Director, Amandalynn, featured a variety of pop-up exhibitions with paintings, jewelry, photography, sculptures and installations － many for sale － by more than 80 artists. In reference to the inaugural and future events, Amandalynn said, "music and art are so naturally interwoven, it only makes sense to highlight them both with equal enthusiasm."
Mural artist and painter Jet Martinez (covered here) is using his art to carry on an ancient form of visual inspiration while providing a contemporary spin on folk art motifs. For Martinez, each painting is an opportunity to preserve heritage as well as build our living community through creativity and public interactions. Originally from Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico, Martinez attended the San Francisco Art Institute to pursue painting and printmaking. In his current body of work, the artist focuses on a technique of painting floral works inspired by Michoacán lacquered plates – objects crafted by generations of Mexican artisans that has made up a primary industry in the area for generations.
Those who have walked the streets of San Francisco will recognize Jet Martinez and Chor Boogie's colorful styles. The prolific artists are stalwarts of the city's street art scene and their work can be seen in the Mission District's ever-evolving, outdoor mural gallery, Clarion Alley. Boogie and Martinez have teamed up for the exhibition "Balance," opening at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco on November 7.
