Azuma Makoto’s Photographs of Bouquets Sent Into Space

Azuma Makoto’s known for his ambitious flower art, manipulating nature into something new, yet still maintaining its beauty. With the “In Bloom” project, he’s taken his sensibilities to space. Makoto’s been sending bouquets to space with specialized balloon vehicles and cameras. The result is something that combines the inherent exquisiteness of the Earth and its surrounding bodies.

Makoto offers some insight into how this incarnation of the series had to be planned: “For this installment, the subject – the flowers – will be significantly larger and heavier than in our first installment,” the artist wrote. “Weighing approximately 6kg with a diameter of approximately 1.5m, we will launch this huge ‘bouquet’ from the Love Lock Desert of Nevada, US. The bouquet will then be arranged around the structure of the Earth. Although we were previously not able to due to the weight limit, for this project we will be using a medium-format mirrorless camera to best capture the process of change and movement in the flowers in full clarity. The ever-changing landscape of the flowers, the changes in lighting and contrast from the direct rays from the sun, the ways in the which the flowers will react in an environment of -60°C, and the way in which they will scatter and fall back to the ground… we will record this epic documentary of the flowers’ progress from ground to heavens, and back.”

The world of multi-disciplinary artist Floria Sigismondi is a surrealist dystopia. The Italian born, Canadian raised photographer and filmmaker has created a dark paradise born of a potent blend of decadent decay, dark theatrics, high fashion, seedy environments, and a subverting look at what constitutes the nature of beauty. pondering-loop Young photographer Kevin Welsh explores the dark turns the mind can take with his recent body of work, which focuses on the theme of delusion. In his latest pieces, Welsh turns still photographs into hypnotizing GIFs filled with dizzying patterns meant to illustrate obsessions spinning out of control. "In isolation, the mind can move and believe many different things. Delusions manifest and become inescapable," wrote Welsh in an email to Hi-Fructose. "The removal of the figure is to show the idea of a person and to try to find understanding in delusion. Repeat patterns are seemingly never ending and are used to display the reaffirmation in our minds of the delusions we face." Welsh is currently completing his degree in printmaking at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and we look forward to seeing how his work develops.
Iranian artist Negar Farajiani uses her own self-portrait in a series of puzzles, where she distorts, hides, and reveals her physical appearance and identity. To make the puzzles, Faraijani cuts identical jigsaw pieces from dry mounted photographs. She then reassembles the pieces to create new, slightly chaotic and impractical compositions.
Going through Randy Hage’s “New York Storefronts” series of photographs had me admiring them as photographs for all the reasons you admire a great photograph; color, composition, a story... until I read the captions: "1/12th scale sculpture of a bodega in Brooklyn..." These storefront miniatures could be thought of as time capsules of a potentially endangered species, capturing the delicate beauty of aging architecture. Hage has been creating sets, models, and props for the TV/Film and small scale hobby industries for over 25 years and has an upcoming solo show at Flower Pepper gallery October 10th, 2015.
