Marianna Ignataki’s Mysterious, Theatrical Drawings

The symbols of the mask and the theater have long been a part of many aesthetic traditions. In her light, airy drawings, Greek-born, Beijing-based artist Marianna Ignataki explores the idea of identity through these motifs, drawing mysterious female characters clad in strange costumes or contorted in bizarre positions. Her works give little context about these women and the bizarre, surreal performance they seem to be enacting; the minimal details allow the viewer to fill in the gaps.
