The Oil Paintings of Reza Bahmani

Reza Bahmani's oil paintings, with each's distinctive texture and scale, carry a distinct intimacy. In his recent show at Saless Gallery an accompanying score that required the use of headphones further beckoned viewers to focus on the massive portraits.

Italian-born, Japan-based artist Philip Giordano paints humorous animal characters with textured, impressionistic brushstrokes — an unusual juxtaposition of traditional techniques and a cartoon-like style. Giordano is a children's book illustrator by trade and his personal work retains similarly whimsical qualities. His latest series of paintings depicts a gigantic cat in a place that could either be in the thick of the forest or underwater. Sea creatures float in mid air while the cat examines a variety of surreal characters and object that seem to be its playthings. One wouldn't necessarily describe the narratives in Giordano's paintings as adventures because his fictional world seems neatly arranged and unmoving, almost like a still life. Take a look at Giordano's latest work below.
Justin Lim’s recent acrylic and enamel paintings convene symbols of both nature’s beauty and manmade destruction. The dominant aspect of each work, whether a mushroom cloud or floral arrangement, is only a point of entry for a work that reveals itself as critiquing multiple concepts at a time.
Eduardo Naranjo (born in 1944) has enjoyed a decades-long career as a painter. Influenced by the Cubists and Surrealists of his native Spain, in the 1970s he evolved his style from abstract expressionism to the surreal, figurative oil paintings he creates today. The artist's works are tightly controlled and vivid. He often plays with translucent figures, layering images like strange memories intermingling inside of a dream. There's something photographic about Naranjo's work, not only in his realist approach to figuration but in the frayed edges and paper-like textures he renders, evoking old, found photographs.
Moscow-based artist Slava Fokk paints flat, exaggerated figures that evoke vintage advertisements and Art Nouveau alike. His work is imbued with burgundy, teal, and beige color schemes that give it a retro feel. Female characters populate his stylized world. Fokk zeroes in on select details like the contours of the cheek bones and eyelids while making the hair and body abstract. His sleek brushwork gives his characters an otherworldly appearance.
