Oil Painter Joel Rea Crafts New, Modern Myths

by Andy SmithPosted on

Oil painter Joel Rea crafts surreal, modern narratives that create confrontations between man and nature. The artist, living and working in Australia, designs allegories that speak to the fragility and power of either side.He most recently had an exhibition at Mitchell Fine Art in Brisbane titled “Outsider.” Rea last appeared on HiFructose.com here.

“My paintings are my mythology,” Rea has said. “The surreal spectacles are staged fiction spawned from my imagination and the manipulation of photographic references, yet are very much emotionally influenced by my day-to-day life. The figures in my paintings (usually myself and my wife) move from scene to scene like the main characters of a book or film. They experience the full emotional spectrum of our coexistence as human beings and also make real the thoughts often hidden in the depths of all our private minds.”
