Diane Meyer Plays With Memory, Distortion by Embroidering Photos

Diane Meyer emulates pixels and digital imaging with cross-stitched embroidery, sewn into her photos. Whether it’s a series of travel captures or her own, personal family snaps, Meyer explores both intersecting eras of photography and the concept of memory itself. The result is something that both distorts and celebrates the longevity of these experiences.

“I am interested in the disjunct between actual experience and photographic representation and photography’s ability to supplant memory,” Meyer says, of the series “Time Spent That Might Otherwise Be Forgotten.” “By borrowing the visual language of digital imaging with an analog process, a connection is made between forgetting and digital file corruption. The tactility of the pieces also references the growing trend of photos remaining primarily digital-stored on cell phones and hard drives, but rarely printed out into a tangible object.”

Meyer’s “Berlin” series took this concept along the entire 104-mile circumference of the Berlin Wall. The artist, who has an MFA from the University of California in San Diego, has had her work shown across the world. Recent shows occupied spaces in New York, Germany, Chicago, and Utah. Meyer is currently based in Los Angeles.

Swedish artist Susanna Hesselberg's latest work plummets deep into the ground Alice-in-Wonderland-style. “When My Father Died It Was Like a Whole Library Had Burned Down” (named after Laurie Anderson’s song "World Without End") is a mind bending reproduction of a library inherited by the artist from her father, created for Denmark's Sculpture by the Sea exhibition series. The biennial festival, which closed on July 5th, boasted 56 site specific installations along the Danish coast. Hesselberg's mysterious contribution is vertical tunnel framed by a piece of glass that allows viewers to peer into a dark tower books only visible by their spines. Hesselberg wanted to recreate the depth of loss or losing control, as one might experience when a loved one dies.
Stefan Gesell, a German photographer, creates portraits that appear to be torn from the pages of sci-fi and horror novels. Using dynamic lighting and effects, the rawness and aggression of Gesell’s work makes it stand out among peers attempting to capture dystopian worlds within the same form.
Honolulu, Hawaii based photographer and designer Petey Ulatan often creates images that explore the impossible. A recent series, which Ulatan posts to his Instagram page, takes this idea and applies it to infinite scenarios: digital photo-manipulations of his own photographs from his travels, others from Google images, that re-shape the world as if it were folded into a giant cube.
Michael Jackson is a British artist currently exploring the luminogram process to capture monochromatic, abstract displays of light. For those who aren't familiar, luminograms are images created by exposure of photosensitive materials to light without the intervention of an object. "No camera, no film, no objects - just light directed onto light sensitive paper in the darkroom," explains Jackson.
