Miami Art Week 2014: Street Art Highlights from Wynwood

Interesni Kazki detail While the collectors were busy at the fairs during Miami Art Week, street artists descended upon the Wynwood neighborhood to add new murals to the urban landscape, with thousands of eager tourists with cameras at the ready following not far behind. While many murals from past years have been preserved, we spotted new additions by the likes of Interesni Kazki, Nychos (who painted five separate walls), Faith47, Alexis Diaz, Swoon, Cleon Peterson, and many others. Colorful new pieces spilled out of the designated Wynwood Walls area and into the neighborhood. Several artists, such as Pixel Pancho, So Youn Lee, Nychos, and Bikismo, painted at the Jose de Diego Middle School, where, as we learned, arts funding has recently been cut. Australian artist Beastman's murals flow like freeform doodles across building facades. Tessellating triangle patterns, organic, leaf-like shapes, and radiating beams of color morph into one another to create symmetrical, mandala-like designs. Beastman's latest work was spotted in the Re.Discover festival in Bunbury, Australia, which took place this past weekend. The new piece drapes a woven-looking pattern over a hexagonal building like a psychedelic koozie or quilt. Check out Beastman's latest murals and studio works below.

Etam Cru’s “Mr. Rooster” is the Duo’s Second Major Mural in the US

Having just come off their exhibition at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles (covered here), Polish street art duo Sainer and Bezt, known as Etam Cru, recently completed their second major mural in the United States. Co-produced by Thinkspace and Branded Arts, their wall "Mr. Rooster" is a massive portrait of a young country boy with a rooster standing on his shoulders as he looks over the smoggy city of Los Angeles.

Rimon Guimarães is a young, Brazilian artist who has painted murals across the world, visiting locales such as the Netherlands, France, and Gambia to leave pieces of his work behind. Guimarães' works typically feature mask-like characters and bright colors and patterns — perhaps an homage to the prevalence of African diasporic traditions in his native country. Indeed, the pieces he created in Gambia look right at home, juxtaposed with local women passing by in their exquisitely patterned dresses. His work exudes happiness and adds vibrance to any urban setting.

Norway Introduces First Official Street Art Trail, Nuart Sandnes

The hardworking team behind one of the world's longest lasting street art festivals, Nuart in Norway, covered here over the years, recently announced the launch of yet another public art project. Nuart Sandnes Art Trail is Norway’s first official Street Art Trail, and its main goal is to connect Sandnes’ urban center with the city’s surrounding rural areas.
