While Jen Stark is fascinated with quantum physics and mathematics, her elaborate paper sculptures are not the products of elaborate measurements and calculations as one might expect. In fact, the only measuring tool in Stark’s home studio in LA is a hand-drawn ruler the artist made herself out of construction paper. As I watched her construct a 70-layer paper sculpture (“OOOOH,” it said on her sketch of the rainbow-colored piece), it hit that her ability to duplicate complexly-cut shapes and glue them with precision was all freestyle. Stark has a natural gift for what you could call intuitive geometry. She is currently working on several commissions and has a public art project in the works for the upcoming year.
