Michael Reedy Returns to Arch Enemy Arts

With "Burn With Me" at Arch Enemy Arts, Michael Reedy offers new mixed-media works that examine themes of birth and death. Kicking off on Sept. 6, the show follows the artist's 2016 show at the Philadelphia gallery, "Dust & Moonshine." “I often find myself driven by a rather manic preoccupation with the apparent meaninglessness of it all–especially when coupled with our drive to procreate as a means by which to live beyond our own lifetime,” the artist says. “The idea of living beyond (beyond our own physical existence)–or our soul/spirit floating away, or the “spilling out” of our insides as a means to live on (and in essence escape death) fascinates me.”

Jesse Jacobi’s massive, forested scenes are packed with creatures and ruins, each a dive into a dreamlike, yet vivid world. The vibrant acrylic works make use of camouflage and show seemingly alien civilizations. And on the time and place shown in this works, the artist admit it’s not clear, “but the setting is, I can say with certainty, very far removed from modernity and anything involving current times.”

Midwestern artist Zoe Hawk explores the social constructions of femininity through her portrayals of adolescent girls on the verge of womanhood. Her narrative works resemble illustrations one might find in a children's book, with her subjects playing the parts of sweet-natured schoolgirls, candy stripers, and girl scouts. Yet, as we begin to look beneath the surface, it becomes clear that things are not always as they appear.
