First featured in HF Vol. 18, FAILE is a collaboration between Brooklyn-based artists Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller. Known for their critique on modern consumer culture and over indulgence, the two man art collective covers the walls of the Brooklyn Museum this week with their eye-catching, graphic style for their latest exhibition “Savage/Sacred Young Minds.” The exhibition sees the addition of new paintings and sculptures that display the artists’ growth, and also brings back some of their most well-known previous work including their two installations, "Temple" and "The FAILE & BÄST Deluxx Fluxx Arcade".
While comics typically tell stories with a linear structure, Chitra Ganesh utilizes the popular format to create open-ended images that reflect on her personal life experiences as well as elements of her Indian heritage and Brooklyn upbringing. She works with digital collage, painting, and installation, creating multilayered narratives with multiple meanings. In her comic-inspired work, she utilizes text for poetic streams of consciousness rather than for expounding plot or dialogue.
Kehinde Wiley’s larger-than-life paintings (featured in HF Vol. 29) insert black and brown individuals into the typically all-white history of Western portraiture. His subjects, a majority of whom are urban males, are cast in poses that assertively beckon old master paintings of European kings and emperors. Some gallantly ride horses, while others don regalia. All figures peer commandingly at the viewer in Wiley’s 14-year survey “Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic” currently on view at the Brooklyn Museum.
