“IRIDESCENCE” Exhibition in Miami Presents ‘New Futurism’ Art

The number of events cashing in on Miami Art Week was extensive and impossible to list, but one that stood out was Sarah Potter and Hannah Stouffer's prismatic "IRIDESCENCE" exhibit. The show took place in the 3rd floor Gallery at the Shore Club South Beach, where a friendly mermaid in the lobby pointed you to a futuristic installation featuring international artists including Justin Lovato, Adam Friedman, Lala Abaddon, Francesco Locastro, Gustavo Torres (KidMoGraph), Ultramajic, Jose Di Gregorio, Jonny Alexander, and Hilary White.

The number of events cashing in on Miami Art Week was extensive and impossible to list, but one that stood out was Sarah Potter and Hannah Stouffer’s prismatic “IRIDESCENCE” exhibit. The show took place in the 3rd floor Gallery at the Shore Club South Beach, where a friendly mermaid in the lobby pointed you to a futuristic installation featuring international artists including Justin Lovato, Adam Friedman, Lala Abaddon, Francesco Locastro, Gustavo Torres (KidMoGraph), David Cook (Bonethrower), Ultramajic, Jose Di Gregorio, Jonny Alexander, and Hilary White. Their works are representative of what the curators call the ‘New Futurism’ genre, a style of work that expresses interest in math and science, as it applies to the artists’ visions of nature and fantasies about other-worlds. The exhibition offered several Op-art inspired paintings by Justin Lovato, Adam Friedman, who also designed a massive sculptural space for SCOPE Miami Beach (covered here), and Jonny Alexander, who we found collaborating on the “IRIDESCENCE” mural with artist Aaron Glasson (covered here) in Wynwood. We were also introduced to the psychological photography project by Radiant Human, a project that captures your mood through a specially-designed lomography camera inside of a structure that looks like a lunar outpost. Though the event ended with the rest of Miami Art Week, you can still find the “IRIDESCENCE” mural at the Electric Pickle in Wynwood, which will remain there indefinitely. Multimedia artist Hilary White (covered here) creates vividly colorful sculptural works that delve into the symbolic, the altered, and the literal exploration of the "now" within the framework of time. White has an upcoming two-person exhibit with Hannah Stouffer, whom she originally found out about through social media. White found that Stouffer’s range of material and aesthetic to be something she immediately connected with, and set in motion the beginnings of what would eventually become the exhibit titled "Ingress Egress" which opens July 24th at Paradigm Gallery in Philadelphia, PA.

In Justin Lovato's new paintings, patterns are layered on top of one another to create dualistic compositions. Kaleidoscopic, sunset-hued arrangements of shapes in turn create new images with their negative space, an effect the artist says represents a conduit between two worlds. "I have always been interested in dreams, subconscious and ecstatic states, and the experience of alternate or parallel universes or dimensions," wrote Lovato in an email to Hi-Fructose. "With this series especially I have been trying to relay the idea of parallel but different planes transposed on top of one another."

Hannah Stouffer is a Los Angeles based artist who describes herself as a highly curious individual. She learns by engaging with a topic and researching it obsessively. Stouffer finds her path of discovery, as well as self-discovery, to be an extremely important avenue for creativity, often achieving a meditative state while working. Her two-person show with Hilary White (recently interviewed here), titled "Ingress Egress" opens July 24th at Paradigm Gallery in Philadelphia, PA.

This year's rendition of SCOPE Miami Beach, coinciding with Miami Art Week festivities, features many galleries that will be familiar to Hi-Fructose readers as well as dozens of artists who have appeared in our print issues. An enormous installation by Swoon featuring a cut-out portrait of a majestic woman charging triumphantly forward greets viewers as they enter the fair, ushering them into the many collections of figurative, Pop Art-inspired, and streetwise art that lies ahead.
