New York City based artist Jason Yarmosky (whose work we recently encountered here at ArtMrkt) creates modern, realistic portraits of an elderly couple imbued with the whimsical energy of youth. The couple, the artist’s natural grandparents, are shown costumed in a variety of striking choices, from a Viking helmet to a police uniform, that highly contrasts with their aged bodies. While the work has been viewed by some as a vulnerable depiction of the elderly engaging in nostalgic role playing, the artist’s intentions were more endearing, as he tells us, “Growing old shouldn’t preclude anyone from enjoying the same sense of joy, experimentation, and exploration that we associate with young people”.
