There is no doubt: the work of Alexa Meade and Sheila Vand are painterly. Indeed, the compositions nearly look like expressionist or post-impressionist paintings. In reality, however, they are photographs. Vand is painted in thick layers of acrylic paint. Instead of a canvas, she is immersed in and surrounded by milk. Pigment smears and swirls around her body as Meade photographs the living painting. In this way, the photographs are nearly a documentation of a performance. Yet, the paint’s interaction with Vand’s body and pool of milk creates a strange two-dimensional effect which makes each photograph seem even more painting-like.
