Darkly Surreal Portraiture by Jason Snyder

The artwork of painter Jason Syder is a modern surreal take on traditional portraiture.  Much like traditional portraiture, Snyder's work often depicts only the bust of his subject.  His highly detailed work is frequently surrounded by an ornate frame, encouraging the viewer to give particular attention to each individual painting.  Snyder's paintings, though, are punctuated by a quiet surrealism and subtle darkness - enough to draw a viewer in while not being heavy handed.  Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, Snyder began painting while in college, developing his skill and style through self teaching.
