This Saturday, Lezley Saar will premiere her solo show, “Madwoman in the Attic” at Merry Karnowski Gallery. With a theme reminiscent of Judy Chicago’s infamous The Dinner Party — an epic installation that attempted to reclaim history’s forgotten female leaders and innovators — “Madwoman in the Attic” celebrates 19th-century literature’s most famous female characters such as Lev Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and Kate Chopin’s Edna Pontellier. Subverting the stereotypes of this era, which was tinged my colonialism and strict gender norms, Saar utilizes a 19th-century portraiture style and surrealist collage to give a new voice to the female characters traditionally portrayed through a male gaze.
