Exhibiting concurrently with Jonathan Viner’s “Cold Snap” (previewed here), will be "Black Moon New York" by longtime friends, Jessicka Addams, Camille Rose Garcia, Elizabeth McGrath and Marion Peck. With the help of gallerist Alix Sloan of Sloan Fine Art, they began their collective for "Black Moon" in 2013, inspired by their special comradery. This year, they've created a more ambitious body of work inspired by autumn. Autumn and the idea of witchcraft is represented here in their signature stylistic choices. All share a dark and disturbing quality mixed with a dash of playfulness. Rather than depicting this famous seasonal character as evil, each makes a connection between witches and their kin.
It's blistering cold outside, but the whiskey is keeping you warm and the crackling of the record player is drowning out the howling wind outside. Jonathan Viner's new paintings for his upcoming solo show "Cold Snap" immerses the viewer in stylized, retro images of this sort of wintery paradise. Filled with nostalgic imagery and elements of '70s counterculture, his paintings are rife with intrigue amid their idyllic milieu. The works take on an illustrative quality as they let viewers in on an art theft in progress or what looks like an erotic encounter gone awry. "Cold Snap" opens at Sloan Fine Art in New York on October 24 and will be on view through November 2.
A collaboration between curators Alix Sloan of Sloan Fine Art and Noah Antieau of Red Truck Gallery, "Small Indignities" is an upcoming group show that features new works from a diverse crop of established and noteworthy emerging artists — and even some Pop Surrealist royalty. The exhibition will open at Red Truck Gallery in New Orleans on September 13. Influential painters Mark Ryden (HF Vol. 28 cover artist) and Marion Peck will be exhibiting alongside the likes of painter and illustrator Camille Rose Garcia (recently featured in HF Vol. 30), digital artists Ransom & Mitchell, heavy metal quilter Ben Venom, assemblagist Brian Cunningham and many others. With so many artists working in a variety of disciplines, the exhibition is an interesting look at how the spirit of low brow has influenced artists of various styles and generations.
