The work of Los Angeles based artist Robert S. Connett, featured here on our blog, portrays a dark and bizarre world teaming with microscopic life. In his own words, "a collection of things that I find extremely appealing and engaging. I paint things that enchant me, and I paint because I enjoy seeing my imagination come to life." His images present rare and overlooked creatures, from aquatic organisms like ciliates, shrimps, and crabs, to a myriad of butterflies and rainbow-colored grasshoppers, that he best describes as miracles of life.
Closing this weekend is La Luz de Jesus gallery's juried show, "Laluzapalooza", which sets out to find and highlight new names from the LA art scene each year. Since the '80s, this exhibition has seen several iterations and thousands of submissions spanning kitsch to pop culture and La Luz's claim to fame, Pop Surrealism. This year's installment is as eclectic as ever with a focus on labor-intensive work of all mediums. Take a look at our photos from the show after the jump!
Robert S. Connett's highly detailed and Natural Science-inspired illustrations have acquired a few labels, from strange, fantastical, alienesque, to unsettling. Even his website is "grotesque.com." If evolution is an artist, then Connett's artwork captures its unreal color palette and perspectives of worlds rarely explored. His studio in Los Angeles is filled to the brim with specimins, family photos and antiques that serve as reminders of his past and his inspiration. Rarely, if ever, does Connett invite visitors into this private space. In this exclusive interview, we discuss the thought process behind his new works.
For nearly a decade, Copro Gallery has fused emerging talents with established names in the New contemporary art game in their annual "BLAB!" show. The show is the brainchild of Blab World creator and art director, Monte Beauchamp, representative of his eclectic taste in artists of varying aesthetics and a penchant for the unusual. Many of them have appeared in most, if not all, of the annual shows and developed together with the event. Last Saturday, "BLAB!" celebrated it's ninth year as an exhibition with the announcement of the upcoming BLAB World 3 anthology.
