Diabolical kitties, grimacing monsters, and nymph-like girls populate Ciou’s busy mixed-media works, which seem to crawl with constant jitters. Ciou’s highly textured, overflowing compositions create the feeling of motion — a result of her painstaking line work. The French artist recently opened her solo show, “Beyond the Rainbow,” at KochxBos Gallery in Amsterdam. The new show features creepy-cute paintings, some of which are ornamented with elaborate frames, as well as hand-painted sculpture editions and a mural. Take a look at some of the work in the show and see the exhibition in person through February 28.

Dutch artist Harma Heikens (featured in HF Vol. 13) is not afraid to use loaded imagery. Her upcoming show at KochxBos Gallery in Amsterdam, “All Is Fair in Love and War,” toes the line between provocative and profane with a new series of confrontational, human-scale sculptures that touch upon taboo themes such as sexual abuse, violence, media saturation, hate groups and religion. The exhibition coincides with the release of her new book Sculptures, which features a foreword by Hi-Fructose co-editor-in-chief Annie Owens.
