In Kevin Peterson’s new show at Thinkspace Projects, child subjects are paired with sentient animals, unlikely castaways against desolate urban backdrops. "Wild," collecting new vivid paintings from the artist, show these subjects “interchangeably as beacons of hope and symbols of dispossession.” The show runs March 2 through March 23. Kevin Peterson is a Houston-based oil painter recognized for scenes in which wild animals and children interact against urban backdrops. One Peterson piece, "Coalition II," was recently used as the cover for the newest Red Hot Chili Peppers record, "The Getaway." The artist’s third solo exhibition with Thinkspace Gallery, "Sovereign," runs through Sept. 10. Peterson last appeared on HiFructose.com here.
Kevin Peterson's subjects exist somewhere between a wintery city and sunny Houston, where the artist is currently based. Do a web search on his art, and the response is polarizing. Hyperrealism has become a controversial art form- most admire the excruciating detail, while others disagree with copying tags or photographs. Without question, Petersons' portraits of children in a graffiti-colored world are emotional and ironic. His current show at Thinkspace gallery, "Remnants", portrays his own fantasy-urban jungle.
As Issued, Costa Mesa based bookstore and art gallery, celebrates three years tonight with a show curated by Kevin Peterson and Marcas Contemporary's Dana Jazayeri. Titled "Tres Ãnos", As Issued's 3rd year Anniversary show will highlight new and original pieces by 21 artists- Nathan Spoor, JeanPaul Malozzi, Jessica Ward, Shane Jessup, Anthony Hurd, Edith LeBeau, Cate Rangel, just to name a few. They are primarily street artists and figurative painters of the Lowbrow generation, who credit their inspiration to 'zine culture' and share cutting edge aesthetics.
