Dan Quintana Further Dissolves His Macabre Subjects in “Diffused”

Hi-Fructose Vol 27 featured artist Dan Quintana will debut new works this Saturday at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco with “Diffused”. In addition to a new series of oil paintings, the exhibit will also feature several charcoal drawings and a largescale mural. Quintana’s work is known for his detailed images of ephemeral subjects of goddesses and demons that seem to dissolve into their surroundings. Often, his works are layered with ominous narratives and recurring personal symbolism. In the tradition of his aesthetic, “Diffused” portrays dissipating ghost-like figures in images that personify death.

Nicomi Nix Turner, Naoto Hattori, and More Interpret Their Safe Havens

On August 15th, New York welcomed a new gallery, Haven Gallery, with their inaugural exhibition inspired by the idea of safe havens. Their first group of artists have wide ranging styles, many sharing whimsical qualities: Matt Dangler, Kukula (HF Vol. 7), Kari-lise Alexander, Nicomi Nix Turner, Dan Quintana (HF Vol. 27), Shaun Berke, Tom Bagshaw, Naoto Hattori (HF Vol. 7), Zoe Byland, Brian Mashburn, Regan Rosburg, Aunia Kahn, Caitlin McCormack, Rose Freymuth-Frazier, Redd Walitzki, and Nom Kinnear King. Their subjects span still life, landscapes, and figurative works, suggesting that refuge can be found both in the physical as well as within oneself.

On View: “The 13th Hour” Group Show at Last Rites Gallery

A New York City art space with a penchant for the macabre, Last Rites Gallery currently has its annual group show, “The 13th Hour,” on view just in time for Halloween. The show features artists who have come to be associated with Last Rites — Dan Quintana, Naoto Hattori, David Stoupakis, menton3, Paul Booth — as well as many unexpected participants like Hannah Yata, Nicomi Nix Turner, Brin Levinson and Jean Labourdette. However, these are just a few examples of the show’s wide-ranging roster. Take a look at some highlights from the exhibition below and check out the show through November 15.

Opening Night: “Perverse Foil” by Karen Hsiao and Dan Quintana at Marcas Contemporary Art

When we visited Karen Hsiao and Dan Quintana in their Los Angeles studio last month, they were hard at work on their collaborative show, “Perverse Foil”. It is a project that have been brainstorming about since 2009. On Saturday, they finally celebrated the opening at Marcas Contemporary Art in Santa Ana. At the event, attendees were treated to a live reenactment of their collaboration through a photoshoot by Hsiao in front of a backdrop by Quintana. She compliments Quintana’s surreal world with new black and white photographs and notably, her first figurative oil paintings and graphite.

“Perverse Foil”: Studio Visit with Karen Hsiao and Dan Quintana

Los Angeles based artists Karen Hsiao and Dan Quintana each evoke complex life themes in their figurative work. They will combine subject matter with “Perverse Foil”, opening August 2nd at Marcas Contemporary Art in Santa Ana. Hsiao, who is also a professional photographer, will be exhibiting original paintings and drawings in collaboration with Quintana, who has created surrealistic works based on her photos. On View: “Steer Ahead” Group Show at Soze Gallery

Now on view at Soze Gallery is “Steer Ahead”, a unique group exhibition of hand-painted steer skulls benefitting CAMP2E. Proceeds from the artwork go to the charity’s art programs created to empower Los Angeles inner city youths, ages 8-14. Among the artists involved are street artists and pop surrealists Dan Quintana (featured in Hi-Fructose issue 27), Victor Castillo (issue 23), Dave Kinsey (issue 13), Retna, Cyrcle, Gregory Siff, Aaron de la Cruz, Paige Smith, and more.
