Zolloc is the moniker of Austin-bred, New York City-based artist/animator Hayden Zezula. When HiFructose.com last checked in with the Tumblr-lauded phenom, we called his gray-toned, mutant baby-filled GIFs “chill-inducing.” Many of the GIFs in this piece take on a more abstract form, vague structures that bubble and evolve. There’s still an organic aspect to those creations, and somehow, the artist’s work maintains its ability to be both absorbing and inspire uneasiness.
Following up on our coverage of the 21st annual LA Art Show, posted yesterday, today we bring you an extensive look at another annual highlight- the Littletopia section of local West Coast galleries and artists. This year, Littletopia continued its foray into featuring Pop Surrealsim works of every shape, size, and imaginable medium from the following galleries: Antler Gallery, Artists Republic 4 Tomorrow, Coagula Curatorial, Copro Gallery, Daniel Rolnik Gallery, Gauntlet Gallery, Gregorio Escalante Gallery, Paradigm Gallery + Studio, Red Truck Gallery, Thinkspace and Think Tank. Together with LA Art Show, they presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Robert Williams, featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 26, who is arguably lauded as the ‘godfather of Lowbrow art and culture’.
Symmetry and beauty are often claimed to be linked, however over the years, artists have discovered that the less predictable beauty in asymmetry results in a more interesting piece of art. American artist James McNeill Whistler’s “The Artist’s Mother” is often used as a prime example of how imbalance can improve a composition, while Andy Warhol’s famous “Marilyn Diptych”, a work consisting of two panels, is argued by art critics as one of the best pieces he ever created. Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles noticed the influence of these visual concepts and asked artists to combine them, resulting in the “Asymmetrical Diptych Group Show”.
Last Saturday marked a milestone for Copro Gallery in Los Angeles which has played host to the “BLAB!” show for ten years. We have covered the show throughout its run, originally created by the Blab World anthology creator and art director, Monte Beauchamp, known for his varied interests in art. With this year’s exhibit honoring the release of the next anthology comes a new crop of artists reflecting Blab’s ever-growing taste.
In today’s advertising world, it’s almost impossible the avoid visual landscape of company brand names and logos. We endulge in a pop culture that is virtually paid for and made possible by “product placement”, creating often unwelcome interruptions. This Saturday, CHG Circa gallery’s artists have chosen to interrupt their own imagery in “Product Displacement”. Consumerism is a necessary evil to a healthy economy that has intrigued artists for decades. Perhaps the most famous example is Andy Warhol, whose works like the Campbell soup cans forced us to reckon with big business’ presence in our lives. Artists such as Eric Joyner, Buff Monster, Shag, Brandi Milne, Richard J. Oliver, Andrew Brandou, Ron English, and Sylvia Ji take a cue from artists like Warhol to publicize their own experiences with advertising.
Now a well-established Manhattan gallerist, Jonathan LeVine continues to nod to his roots in the 1980s New York punk scene with his curatorial choices. Over the past 10 years, Jonathan LeVine Gallery has become a premier destination for high-caliber art with a countercultural aesthetic and the gallery (which is down divided into two locations) will celebrate a decade in business with “The Color and the Fury: 10 Years of Jonathan LeVine Gallery.”
