There is a world of hidden meaning in classic children’s literature that dates back centuries. Tales like Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland explore dark and sometimes violent themes, in counterpart to the friendlier The Cat in the Hat and Winnie-the-Pooh. These stories provide the inspiration of Modern Eden Gallery’s upcoming group show “Storybook: An Art Journey Through Childhood” opening on April 25th. Curated by the Warholian’s Michael Cuffe, the exhibition features over 65 artists including Jasmine Becket-Griffith, Ciou, Jana Brike, Leilani Bustamante, Steve Chmilar, Aunia Kahn, Edith Lebeau, Calvin Ma, David Natale, Lori Nelson, Richard James Oliver, Peca, Michael Ramstead, Isabel Samaras, Erika Sanada, Hannah Yata, just to name a few.

On January 10th, “Feral Creatures” curator Stefanie Chefas will bring a new crop of artists to Modern Eden Gallery with “Platinum Blend”. The title refers to each artist’s ability to ‘blend’ different styles in a way that feels consistent throughout their careers, and amongst eachother. This includes artists Mel Kadel, Jana Brike, Deedee Cheriel, Brian Donnelly, Christine Wu, Zoë Williams, and Henrik Aa. Uldalen, featured here.

Curated by artist Gromyko Semper, “Endangered Visions” is a group show with a wide breadth of artists but a short longevity. Set to premiere at ManilART, the Philippines’ largest annual art fair, October 15 through 19, the show features dozens of Filipino and international artists who work with surreal imagery, albeit in vastly different ways. “‘Endangered Visions’ seeks to counterbalance an art world driven by a rapacious market with something more contemplative, subtle and challenging,” said Semper in an email to Hi-Fructose. In addition to organizing the show, he will be one of the exhibiting artists alongside Jana Brike, Teiji Hayama, Kirsten Stingle and many others. Take a look at our preview below.

Opening February 23, North Hollywood’s Cella Gallery will debut the group show “Something Wicked This Way Comes.” Featured artists include Christian Rex van Minnen (featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 25), Fulvio Di Piazza (featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 25), Annie Owens (Hi-Fructose co-founder), Chrystal Chan, David Ball, Jana Brike, Jessica Ward, Judith Supine, Christine Wu and Michael Page (featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 19). Curated by Hi-Fructose contributor Stephanie Chefas, the show features a wide array of artists who use subversive and grotesque imagery in visually appealing, even enticing, ways. “Each artist was chosen based on their dark allure and ability to transform what naturally repels us into something utterly captivating,” said Chefas. “By consistently pushing conventional norms, these artists are simultaneously challenging the viewer as well as themselves.” Take a look at our preview of the show after the jump.
