Recently opened this past weekend in NYC’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery were solo offerings from artists Audrey Kawasaki (the cover artist of the upcoming HF Vol.25) and Jeff Soto (HF Vol.16 cover artist). Both artists showed significant growth in their work; Kawasaki with the introduction of bold, black graphic shapes while Soto explored the use of human figures in tandem to his long limbed organic creatures. Both artists employed vibrant color palettes — a departure for Kawasaki’s usually muted color schemes, while Soto’s work exploded with bright neon hues. On September 8, Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York will open three solo shows by Audrey Kawasaki, Jeff Soto and Judith Supine. Known for her ethereal paintings of delicate heroines, Audrey Kawasaki (Hi-Fructose Collected Edition 2 cover artist) appears to have taken a new direction in her work, creating darker pieces that show her female protagonists with a sense of authority and occult sensuality. Jeff Soto (Hi-Fructose Vol. 16 cover artist) and Judith Supine’s works display a different kind of edginess, with Soto’s paintings exploring the ideas of death and regeneration and Supine’s collages playing with the concept of gender identity. Proceeds of this post-Comic Con effort will benefit the Arctic Program at the World Wildlife Fund. Hi-Fructose fave Audrey Kawasaki will be showing a new body of work this weekend at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. Earlier in the month, we previewed the new works by Femke Hiemstra, who will be joining Kawasaki as well as DeeDee Cheriel (last seen here) for this Saturday night’s opening. In addition to the sensual paintings for which Kawasaki has become so well regarded, the artist continues on her use of hand cut paper portraits, a fitting medium for her already delicate subjects. Get an extensive look at the new body of work, as well as an intimate look into her workspace, here on Hi-Fructose.
