Fun with your phone that isn’t doom scrolling..
From Pepper’s Ghost loving multi-media artist Josh Ellingson.
@ellingson.tv
Here’s a demo from a couple of years ago that shows how to make a Pepper’s Ghost reflection effect using your phone and a plastic dome drink lid.
If you don’t know, a Pepper’s Ghost is a type of special effect that uses reflections to create the illusion of something that isn’t really there. It was made popular in the late 1800s by John Pepper and that’s where the name comes from. Although it sounds very old-timey, the term is still used today. Sometimes it’s marketed with the term “hologram” since we all sort of know from movies what that means. However, if you want to find out more about this specific effect, it’s best to search for the term “Pepper’s Ghost” instead. If you learn how to make actual holograms using holography, please send me what you make because that sounds complicated and very cool.
You can find #pepperghost in theme parks, movies, HUD displays in vehicles, games, stage shows, and other art and DIY projects like mine.

Musician and video creator Jason Chu discusses the artist Miné Okubo, an American citizen who was interned in an American concentration camp during World War II.
@jasonchumusic
Says Chu: After 2 Christmases in Topaz War Relocation Center, Miné Okubo went on to a long career in illustration and painting. Her work has been exhibited in the Met, the Japanese American Museum and more. In the 80s, her testimony - including Citizen 13660 - was presented to support establishing reparations for the 120,000+ Japanese who were found to have been illegally incarcerated during WWII.
Among other honors, in 2006 Riverside City College named a street after her - Miné Okubo Avenue.”

Many Los Angeles based artists are sorting through their decimated homes and studio wreckage and finding remnants of heartbreak and catharsis.
First slide: HF cover feature artist Jean Pierre Roy. @jeanpierreroy
2nd Slide: a burned sculpture found by Cleon Peterson (featured in HF 40) @cleonpeterson
Says Roy:
“Creation from destruction is the only way I know. This was the ‘66 Stingray my father and I had as a project car. It represented a dream from his youth and it was beautiful watching him open it up and put it back together. Problems of a size he could not only solve but enjoy solving. There is no joy in it now. I’m so very sorry, dad.”
