Have you ever noticed how everything goes quiet before a storm- the air seems still and calm, when suddenly a line of ominous clouds appear? It’s an intriguing phenomenon that people have recognized for centuries, and the inspiration behind Beau Stanton and Logan Hicks’s exhibition, “Calm Before the Storm”. Their show, which opened last Friday at New York City’s Highline Loft, borrows from nautical stories, both true and mythical, and themes in classical painting.
New York based artist Logan Hicks surpasses the standard stencil art concept with his uniquely intricate images. Though created with stencils, he is able to achieve the subtlety of color, light and gradients in his otherwise bold and geometric works. We’ve previously featured his work on our blog, and soon in Vol. 37, where we take a closer look at his mastery of stenciling. Now exhibiting at 1am Gallery in San Francisco, Hicks’ latest series also achieves a painterly quality with haunting details.
While stencil art is typically high contrast with bold line work, Logan Hicks’s work transcends this medium’s perceived limitations. His new series of paintings, though created using stencils, shows a subtlety of gradient and color variation, immersing viewers into moody, dimly-lit underwater scenes inspired by Hicks’s recent foray into underwater photography. Hicks took up underwater photography to regain inspiration for his new painting series after hitting personal setbacks over the course of the past year. His new paintings and urban exploration photographs will be in view for a special pop-up exhibition presented by PMM Art Projects titled “Love Never Saved Anything,” on view March 7 through 19 at 154 Stanton Street in New York’s Lower East Side. Take a look at some sneak peeks of his new work after the jump.
On March 8-10, well-known stencil artist Logan Hicks will have a pop-up solo exhibition at LACE in Los Angeles. Titled “Thin Veils and Heavy Anchors,” the show gathers together artworks that have been shown in Taipei, Shanghai, Cape Town and other international cities. Known for his extremely detailed stencils, Hicks explores the dynamism of urban environments in his intricate, geometric works. PMM Art Projects just sent over some exclusive images of Logan at work in his studio, as well as a few images of the artworks in the show. Take a look after the jump!
Now on view at Opera Gallery in New York City is the latest from stencil innovator Logan Hicks. Entitled “Pretty Ugly”, the show surpasses the standard stencil art concept with a cutting edge methodology (anodized aluminum) and stark landscapes more akin to an architectural blueprint than conventional street art. The first time we saw Hicks’ use of this new medium was back at the Manifest Equality show in Los Angeles last year and we’re excited to see the artist’s growth and pursuit in this direction.
