America Dreaming, new work from Mook Simpson, debuts at Copro Gallery this Saturday. "This one's from a series where I take classic paintings of cowboys riding bucking broncos, remove the cowboys, and leave the horse floating in space for a moment, unexplained. Then I paint in another force, something swooping down from above to grab, capture, consume, transport, inhale the horse. I made a short animation to run with the original along with my one. The original shows the cowboy as hero, the bronco as the wild thing that he breaks: man's will proven against nature. This is how the frontier gets tamed. Take the cowboy out and the myth stops making sense. What's left is just a horse, suspended in space and time. That's the moment I paint into. The thing descending isn't a cowboy, and it isn't trying to tame anything. It wants the horse whole. Pure appetite. "Bronco Tentacle" 2026.
12" x 16". Oil on canvas. Painted on a reproduction of "Bucking Bronco" 1904 by Till Goodan.
