The Photographs of Martin Klimas

Photographing porcelain figures the moment they hit the ground, Martin Klimas injects a sense of motion and chaos into an otherwise stationary object. The artist has taken a similar approach to photographing a moment of impact with bullets zipping through vases. For the figures, Klimas says that “the porcelain statuette bursting into pieces isn't what really captures the attention; the fascination lies in the genesis of a dynamic figure that seems to stop/pause the time and make time visible itself.”

The artist describes his process as such: “From a height of three meters, porcelain figurines are dropped on the ground, and the sound they make when they hit trips the shutter release. The result: razor-sharp images of disturbing beauty, more than the sum of its parts. Temporary sculptures made visible to the human eye by high-speed photography.”

A master manipulator in the dark room, Misha Gordin has been creating surreal photographs with PhotoShop-like effects since the 1980s. Gordin's work looks at the universal elements of life: conflict, birth, death, loneliness and the quest for companionship. His bald, naked subjects represent the archetypical everyman. Pretty much every kid loves playing with cardboard boxes. Taiwanese photographer and graphic designer Sydney Sie never stopped playing with them. Her series "Unexpectable Boxes" captures the essence of our childhood pretending in surprising and surreal photographs. In bold candy colors, her images reveal her subjects' faces, fingers and feet peeking out of holes in artificial spaces built by Sie.
Many of us brought our toys to the kitchen table and played with our food, much to our parents' dismay. Although toys were designed to entertain and inspire us in our youth, many artists continue to look back at these childhood artifacts for inspiration. Miami based sculptor and photographer Pablo Dona often refers to his memories of playtime in his art. His installations of hand-crafted miniature people interacting with commonplace items take the innocence of play and create a surreal new reality.
Swedish artist Susanna Hesselberg's latest work plummets deep into the ground Alice-in-Wonderland-style. “When My Father Died It Was Like a Whole Library Had Burned Down” (named after Laurie Anderson’s song "World Without End") is a mind bending reproduction of a library inherited by the artist from her father, created for Denmark's Sculpture by the Sea exhibition series. The biennial festival, which closed on July 5th, boasted 56 site specific installations along the Danish coast. Hesselberg's mysterious contribution is vertical tunnel framed by a piece of glass that allows viewers to peer into a dark tower books only visible by their spines. Hesselberg wanted to recreate the depth of loss or losing control, as one might experience when a loved one dies.
