Painter, animator, and muralist Robert Proch has passed away at the age of 33. The Polish artist was known for a dynamic blend of the figurative, architectural elements, shifting perspectives, and an innovative, kinetic energy coursing through his works. Collaborators KIRK Gallery and Thinkspace Projects both confirmed his passing after a message was posted on his Instagram account Thursday evening.

An excerpt from Thinkspace’s statement on Instagram: “Rest easier now my friend. Our hearts go out to your children and family. You were one of the most humble and talented people I’ve ever met. I wish you realized how many people the world over loved you. We will miss you.”

At the top of the page is his most recent shared mural, created in Grenoble. Below, we have examples of the brilliant painter’s work, on both public structures and gallery walls. He was featured on our site several times, most recently here.

The founder of pioneering Romanian street art collective The Playground, Saddo is an interdisciplinary artist whose offbeat, illustrative paintings reimagine history. He recently relocated to Lisbon, Portugal and created a new series of work for his solo show "Rise of the Bird People," which opens at Objectos Misturados Gallery in the small city of Viana do Costelo on May 31. Saddo has often referenced the master painters of the 15th-17th centuries as major influences. Since he moved to Portugal, he shifted his focus to the local historical happenings of the region. "Rise of the Bird People," though contemporary in style, takes a look at the conquistadors of the aforementioned period — when European imperialism was at its height. The bird people enact violence in the name of conquest. Though Saddo makes these heavy topics easily digestible, the works subtly evoke the ways historical patterns of systematic violence have carried over into today.
Chicago-born artist Kayla Mahaffrey crafts portraits of subjects enveloped by pop totems and surreal elements. Her works are rendered in watercolors and acrylics, each oozing with vibrancy and candy colors. Her practice moves between illustration and fine art.
In Jessie Makinson's oil and watercolor paintings, the artist looks at how women are represented in both pop culture and art history. Melding backdrops and figurative forms, the artist toys with the contours of both, with dense and elegant results. Recent work on gallery walls integrates that sensibility in fascinating ways in these spaces, her women and mythological characters emerging behind hung pieces.
The watercolor paintings of Alfred Steiner create familiar characters out of disparate objects. His piece "Clown (Krusty)," for example, realistically utilizes a salt shaker, banana, the head of critic Jerry Saltz, and much more. Elsewhere the artist creates his subjects out of genitalia.
