Nicola Caredda’s Bleak, Dreamlike Scenes

Nicola Caredda’s dreamlike acrylic paintings blend eroded landscapes and structures, playful bits of pop culture and mystical iconography. Each’s vague narrative appears to be ripped from the subconscious.

“Transcends reality using a dreamy-visionary language … images that blend elements from distant expressive vocabularies,” a statement says. “In his works objects (hang) between the real and the surreal, between physics and metaphysics (and) tell the result of a reality of a vision of the whole inner and subjective. A personal metaphorical language to an alienating result and the same time, a painting that tries to exorcise fear and anguish.”

The Cagliari-born artist studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sassari and “undertook an independent and singular pictorial (path), rather secluded compared to the most popular movements by local artists of his age.” See more of his work below.

Carlo Cane's misty landscapes appear as if in a beautiful dream, but through the thick fog exists something sinister and unappealing. The Italian artist, featured here on our blog, is distraught about how we are treating our environment and the implications of our growing disconnection to nature. But rather than focus on images of loss, he expresses his concern by presenting us with bewildering and surreal portrayals of nature in its most vigorous and alluring state. Cane recently shared his new paintings in an email to Hi-Fructose, in which he explores the possibilities of our future, while taking a note from our past.
Los Angeles painter Lola Gil is known for her surreal, dreamlike works that reference the artist’s own history and the form itself. Her new show at KP Projects, “Outside in Doors,” collect paintings created over a two year span, which explore the subconscious and toy with scale and memory. Gil was last featured on HiFructose.com here.
Throughout his career, self taught Yorkshire based painter Tony South has portrayed English daily life with a unique sense of humor. His portraits of animal subjects with a heavy metal streak are depicted in common day scenes like drinking tea and reading the morning newspaper. South's painting style has been described as "Rockwellian", referring to illustrator Norman Rockwell who painted detailed idyllic scenes of American life. South paints from life with similar realism, building a playful and surreal narrative from his social observations.
Seattle based artist Kari-Lise Alexander's beauties have a norse-like quality true to her Scandinavian roots. They get lost in daydreams in her show "Inflorescence", opening Valentine's Day at Distinction gallery in Escondidio, CA. The title refers to the clusters of flowers they wear, drawn in a style inspired by the Norwegian folk art of rosemaling. Like these complicated twists of branches, her girls seek out and embrace eachother for comfort, melancholy in spite of their prettiness.
