“I have been taking refuge in my memories lately, the artist says. “Memories of the first time I saw a whale in the wild, seeing a meteor shower, and of all the daydreams that kept my wandering mind entertained as a child. Memories like these have become part of my subconscious and reinvigorate me each time I sit down to sketch out an idea for a painting. These memories are a lifeline inviting me to climb down a portal into another world, where I get to escape daily by just picking up a brush.”

The show kicks off Saturday (May 19) and runs through June 16. See more images from “The Escape Artist” below.

Berkeley painter Deth P. Sun's work, taken a whole, can be read almost like a comic book. With each solo show, his blank-eyed cat character — whom longtime fans have come to know well — returns for new adventures. Coming up on April 25, the artist has a solo show at Grumpy Bert in Brooklyn titled "Being and Nothingness." This time, his mystical feline tackles themes of global proportions. Set against a backdrop of a star-lit sky, Sun places the microcosm of his protagonist's world in the larger context of the universe. Amid the endearing visuals are bouts of melancholy as our hero ultimately must face his own mortality. "Being and Nothingness" will be on view through May 24.
Like Adams and Eves freshly banished from the Garden of Eden, Susannah Martin's characters wander through lush, wild landscapes wide-eyed and bewildered at their surroundings. Martin is an American-born artist who has been based in Berlin since 1991. She sees painting nude figures as a continuation of a long lineage of artists who have used the human body to signify what she refers to as man in his purest state.
Hongmin Lee's paintings and drawings carry notes of manga and other pop influences, yet mutate and distort those familiar forms into something more monstrous. At one time, the artist was an active member of art collective Goo For Brothers, yet has since developed his own fine art career with these bold creations. Johan Barrios, a Colombian mixed-media artist, uses graphite, oils, watercolor, and other materials in his figurative works, all carrying surreal abstractions that evoke mystery and quiet drama. There’s a potent blend of tension and tactile intrigue in the artist’s work, with conversing textures and at times, absurd staging. The artist has a new show at Anya Tish Gallery in Houston Texas, titled “Adormecido.” The artist was last featured on HiFructose.com here.
