Moments 2015 Brings Independent Art & Culture to Malaga, Spain

Coming this October, MOMENTS 2015 will bring together artists from all over the world to Malaga, Spain, contributing their art and sharing their processes with festival goers. Now in its second year, those featured in the festival's expansive workshops, screenings, mini-concerts and art exhibitions encompass subcultures of fine art, photography, music, tattoo design, skateboarding, and more. These include two solo exhibition offerings by Los Angeles based artist Tim Biskup (first featured in HF Vol. 2), known for his explosive and surreal character-driven works, and Vancouver based artist Andrew Pommier, who initially entered the scene with his commercial skateboard graphics.

These include two solo exhibition offerings by Los Angeles based artist Tim Biskup (first featured in HF Vol. 2), known for his explosive and surreal character-driven works, and Vancouver based artist Andrew Pommier, who initially entered the scene with his commercial skateboard graphics. Both artists will lead workshops for those who want to learn more about the thinking and techniques behind their latest works. Notably, MOMENTS 2015 marks the world premiere of its original group exhibition “LANDSCATE”, showcasing over 40 international artists hailing from the United States, Europe, Asia, and a 15 year-retrospecive of album cover designs from music label Alone Records. Now on view at Mark Moore Gallery’s project room is “Hunting Trophies” by Jeremy Fish, marking his first solo exhibition there. (We previously covered Fish’s work at Mark Moore gallery here.) Fish injects a high dose of color to the space where he appears next to Christopher Russell’s monochromatic prints, “GRFALWKV”. Walking into the exhibit is like stepping inside Fish’s own trophy room, stacked with cartoon animal ‘kills’ in his highly saturated, illustrative style. Hi-Fructose caught up with Fish to talk about his new work.

Spanish artist Roberto Rodríguez illustrates a fantastic vision of wildlife in his psychedelic paintings. Neon purple tigers and rainbow birds populate grand habitats, some clean and simple, others as lush as Henri Rousseau's jungle scenes. His art is almost child-like but filled with dimension by an overlaying of saturated colors, shapes and textures. Rodríguez is most inspired by the variations and changes of a sunset, something he tries to evoke in his work. Strips of paper are applied to each piece, which are colored with gradients until the desired effect is achieved.

Illustrator Jeremy Fish Has “Anger Management” on the Brain

Last November, San Francisco based illustrator Jeremy Fish (covered here) suffered from a brain aneurism that changed his life and approach to artmaking. The twenty works featured in his exhibition "Anger Management" at Black Book Gallery in Denver were created between surgeries to treat his condition. Fish has had to seek new ways to reduce stress, including visiting an anger management specialist, inspiring the series' title. In new ink, acrylic on wood, and custom skate deck pieces, Fish draws his cute and creepy animals like owls, beavers, jackalopes, and candy skulls with brainy motifs.

The group exhibition "Major Work" at Chandran Gallery in San Francisco features a select group of fourteen artists who are making some of the biggest impacts in contemporary art. The participants are particularly well known for consistently reinventing their own approach to art-making: Alicia McCarthy, Aaron Noble (HF Vol. 5), Kelsey Brookes, Revok, James Marshall aka "Dalek" (HF Vol. 15), Sam Friedman, Eric Yahnker, Mark Dean Veca (HF Vol. 23), Saber, Hilary Pecis, Tim Biskup (HF Vol. 2), Eric White, Allison Schulnik, and Andrew Schoultz, who curated the exhibit.
