After working solely in graphite, the artist has recently expanded to add more oil painting to her repertoire, often portraying romantic images of birds and flowers. Her technique shares sensibilities with Chinese bird-and-flower painting, where subjects can be compared to almost all thoughts and feelings of a person. They can symbolize feminine beauty, virtues, and omens. Inspired by mythological themes, Foley also adds symbolic meaning to her pieces. In her painting of a kingfisher, for instance, she portrays a father kingfisher who stole a flaming arrow from the gods. Viewers can read more about the stories behind her works at her blog.

Portland-based Korean artist Samantha Wall draws perceptive representations of women who exhibit a range of emotions and attitude. Her experience with ‘multi-raciality’ between living in Korea and now the United States inspired her latest drawings, “Indivisible” but it has roots in her previous works. Her simple yet profound drawings are the result of her own experiences and feelings. Emotional desire creates moments of hyper awareness, a characteristic specific to human nature. Wall believes that how we position ourselves in the world directly relates to our bond with others. Read more after the jump.

Heidi Taillefer fuses wild animals, machines, and elements of global mythologies in her surreal oil paintings. The mechanized aspects of these works reference the so-called progress of generations past. The artist herself cites her work as being influenced by “Max Ernst, Giorgio deChirico, and Paul Delvaux, and is an original creative fusion of classical figurative painting, surrealism, contemporary realism, and mythology combined with popular figurative traditions ranging from Victorian romanticism to science fiction.” The artist was last mentioned on HiFructose.com here.
