Hikari Shimoda, Naoto Hattori, and More Present Smaller Works in “Art Collector Starter Kit 3”

Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles just announced that they are moving to a new space, and they are saying goodbye to their Circa gallery with one of their most popular group exhibitions, “Art Collector Start Kit 3”. Opening this Saturday, the exhibit (previously covered here) annually showcases smaller works from both well established and new names in the New Contemporary scene. This year’s show is no less eclectic and presents 12″ x 12″ sized pieces from Brandi Milne, Hannah Yata, Hikari Shimoda (HF Vol. 29), Hirabayashi Takahiro, KiSung Koh, Korin Faught, Lori Nelson, Lu Cong, Naoto Hattori (HF Vol. 7 and 35), and Yoko d’Holbachie (HF Vol. 6 cover artist), among over 30 artists. Their works elaborate on their most current and individual themes, giving us a glimpse of what we can expect from them in the year ahead. For instance, New York based artist Hannah Yata presents one of her signature hybrid animals, a rabbit-fish, in a psychedelic and fetishistic interpretation of a “Druglord”. Japanese painter Hikari Shimoda offers a portrait of her big-eyed child subjects, which she continually adds nuanced and traditional textile-inspired motifs to. “Art Collector Starter Kit 3” will be on view at Corey Helford Gallery’s Circa from July 25th through August 15th, 2015.

Brandi Milne’s pop-surrealist, acrylic paintings are both sweet and strange, each a peek into the artist’s modern-day and childhood influences. A new body of work "Once Upon a Quiet Kingdom," is collected in a show at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, which kicked off on Saturday. This is her fourth solo exhibition.

New York-based artist Naoto Hattori, first featured in HF Vol. 7 and most recently, HF Vol. 35, creates dreamy paintings that are snap shots from his visionary world. It is there in the private recesses of his consciousness where his subjects thrive, he says. Opening July 18th, Hattori's next exhibition at Copro Gallery in Los Angeles titled "Genesis" delves even deeper into the artist's mind - where we dare to think about our creation and place in the universe. Last weekend, Pictoplasma (previously covered here) returned to Berlin for their 11th annual showcase of Contemporary art and design trends. Pictoplasma is well known across the globe for its character design annuals, but the festival also highlights fine art, street art, illustration, toy design, animation, and graphic design. This year saw a continued interest in character-driven Pop surrealism, which addressed modern societal issues through kitsch and cute characters by an eclectic roster. Over 40 international artists took center stage with an extensive program of workshops, lectures at Babylon theater, and two major exhibitions- Pictoplasma's main exhibition "Form Follows Empathy" at Silent Greene and the Pictoplasma Academy Group Show at Urban Spree.
