Hsiao Ron Cheng, Vanessa Foley, and Keith Carter Present New Works in “Tread Softly”

Hsiao Ron Cheng, Vanessa Foley, and Keith Carter present new works that share a soft, delicate color palette and plenty of floral flourishes for their three-person show, "Tread Softly." The title of the show perfectly encapsulates the way in which these works ought to be viewed. They beckon a quiet contemplation to take in their many, muted details,  ethereal figures, and folkloric motifs. "Tread Softly" opens April 30 at Antler Gallery in Portland.

Attention all artists! In partnership with our friends at Squarespace, Hi-Fructose will be highlighting five artists who are currently using Squarespace for their website or portfolio, to be featured on HiFructose.com. This week we are featuring Newcastle, England based artist Vanessa Foley, who expresses an affinity for wildlife in her realistic portraits of animals. She grew up in the Northumberland countryside surrounded by nature which left a lasting impression on her. In her artist statement, she writes, "My love of nature and art are inseparable, and I could never imagine one without the other."
Taipei, Tawain based artist Hsiao-Ron Cheng, has a certain calmness and serenity about her personality that is reflected in her digital illustrations. Her earlier work, first featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 24, portrayed wistful, fairytale-like scenes, but more recently, Cheng has shifted her focus to realistically rendered portraits of people in soft, pastel colors. For the past year, Cheng has elaborated on her portraiture by incorporating natural elements and detail in her subject's expressions and fashion.
