Bear Cub Gallery’s upcoming group show “The Ark” borrows its name from the biblical vessel that carried animals two by two. On September 26th at The Crypt on the Green, London, they’ll exhibit contemporary urban artists in support of IUCN (The International Union for the Conservation of Nature). The exhibition coincides with the 50th anniversary of IUCN’s “Red List” of threatened species. Among the ten international artists chosen are recently covered Okuda, Mark Powell, J.S. Weis, and Laura Ball. Appropriately, their works will be displayed two by two inside an ‘Ark’ installation- a symbol of salvation. Protecting these creatures from imminent danger is not just morally responsible, but these are animals who serve vital roles in their environments. Participating artist J.S. Weis chose to paint the red-listed giraffe. Its life is so intertwined with Africa’s signature tree, the acacia, its disappearance could wipe out acacia completely. He shares, “Nature is brimming with an energy that can seem indiscriminate, snuffing out life as easily as it creates it. At times it gives me an overwhelming sense that we are a part of something special but fleeting, and that the desire for solace and certainty is as unreasonable as if asking if the sky would be here tomorrow.”
“The Ark”, curated by Bear Cub Gallery and IUCN, exhibits at The Crypt on the Green, London from September 26 through October 2, 2014.
