Nikoline Liv Andersen’s Sculptural Fashion Designs

At the intersection of fashion and sculpture you’ll find the wearable artwork of Copenhagen-based artist Nikoline Liv Andersen. “My work is expressive, living in the borderline between fashion and art with a big focus on textiles, textures and delicate details” Anderson said, describing her work. Many of Andersen’s designs challenge the purpose of ordinary materials, using them to create intricate works of art.

Many of Andersen’s designs challenge the purpose of ordinary materials, using them to create intricate works of art.

“I love changing the look of industrial materials that you normally don’t use in clothes into something organic. That can for instance, be plastic drinking straws, nails or rivets.” She said.

Anderson’s mixed media pieces take a variety of forms, as she creates pieces that seem to have both futuristic and archaic elements. Many of the pieces alternate between tones as well. Some are dazzling with eye catching color, while others are more gothic and somber.

In what the artist himself calls "homespun faerie tales", Jon Rappleye blends imagery found in art history, literature, biology, and folklore to portray the cyclical nature of life and death. Ranging from surreal paintings to mixed media sculptures, his works draw from the detailed illustrations of James John Audubon and hallucinatory worlds of Salvador Dalí. And while his subject matter can be grim at times, the artist renders it in such a way that it becomes beautiful and enchanting.
In a new exhibition at Lotte Museum in Seoul, more than 500 works from artist James Jean are on display, from large-scale paintings and installations to to video art and stained glass sculptures. “Eternal Journey” opened on April 4 and runs through Sept. 1. Jean is in the Hi-Fructose Collected 4 Box Set, and was the cover artist for three issues: Vol. 48, Vo. 30, and Vol. 15.
Los Angeles based multimedia artist Amir H. Fallah does not consider our looks to be the most important thing about us. He describes his art as "alternative portraits", portraits of a person that look beyond their physical characteristics. His 2014 exhibition "The Collected" established his definition of portraiture through a variety of methods from ornate paintings that play with color and geometrical patterns to found-object sculpture. With his current installation "The Caretaker" at Nerman Museum Of Contemporary Art in Kansas, Fallah continues this exploration in new paintings and sculpture.
Spanish artist Isaac Cordal recently made Montreal, Canada his playground by hiding miniature cement figures around the city. Covered here on our blog, his art reflects on society by recreating scenes of everyday life with a sense of gloom. In a way, it is a combination of sculpture and photography- a photo can speak a thousand words when it captures his work at just the right moment. For his upcoming exhibition "Urban Inertia" at C.O.A. Gallery, Cordal placed his figures in muddy puddles, cracks in sidewalks and walls, and other unassuming places.
