New York’s Kravets Wehby Gallery currently has a three-person solo show featuring artists that share an academic background and interest in the mystique of femininity: Alison Blickle, Sydney Chastain-Chapman and Aya Uekawa. The three artists received their MFAs from Hunter College, but this is not the only reason for the title of the show, “Huntress.” Blickle, Chastain-Chapman and Uekawa paint self-assured women that harness a sense of power. While Blickle’s nude figures appear like sorceresses, Uekawa’s heroines confrontationally meet the viewer’s gaze and Chastain-Chapman’s female characters seem to be survivors who coexist with forces of nature. “Huntress” is on view through December 21.
