The Extremely Painterly Artwork of Yago Hortal

by Danny OldaPosted on

Describing the abstract paintings of Yago Hortal as ‘painterly’ somehow doesn’t cut it.  In fact, many of the artist’s canvases seem to be reduced to a few giant brush stroke.  The paint curls up and around like a neon wave frozen in motion.  His work takes color and texture in paining to its logical conclusion.  In this way Hortal’s paintings not only invite the viewer’s gaze but also particularly the viewer’s touch.  He establishes a tangible connection between his work and the audience.  Seeing the work in the gallery, it would be difficult resisting the urge to poke it when no one is looking.
