Tasha Lewis’s Traveling Butterfly Swarm Installation

by Nastia VoynovskayaPosted on

Tasha Lewis and her swarm of 2,000 butterfly sculptures traveled in New York City throughout August and September. The butterflies — monochromatic, blue creatures crafted from recycled materials — are light-weight and portable. Using magnets, Lewis affixes them to a variety of surfaces — urban infrastructure, fences and often-ignored public art installation in parks. As the artist documented her and the butterflies’ journey, she created a beautiful stop-motion video that captures the playfulness of the project.
