“Outside the Lines” Offers Monochromatic Works from Well-Known Artists

by Nastia VoynovskayaPosted on

Curated by Souris Hong-Porretta, the new book Outside the Lines: An Artists’ Coloring Book for Giant Imaginations features illustrations from a diverse roster of well-known and emerging artists — mostly notably, Keith Haring, Dave Kinsey, Gary Baseman, Mel Kadel, Laurie Lipton, Kozyndan, Souther Salazar and Shepard Fairey — whose work we are accustomed to seeing in color. While the book gives readers the option of coloring in the pages, perhaps it is better to enjoy the stripped-down artworks in their monochromatic simplicity. It is rare the see artists like Dave Kinsey, Souther Salazar and Gary Baseman let go of loose, painterly brush strokes or intense color palettes and opt for tightly-controlled line work. As an added bonus, a portion of the proceeds from Outside the Lines is being donated to the MOCA’s Education Program. Take a look at some images from the book below.
