Preview: Tom French’s “Duality” at C.A.V.E. Gallery

For his latest series of paintings for his upcoming solo show, "Duality," Tom French investigated the relationship between the conscious and subconscious mind. The artist mixes abstraction and figuration in a series of dual-image paintings, positioning figurative elements within hazy, fluid brushstrokes. These images within images reflect the abilities of the human brain to pick up patterns and make decisions subconsciously. "This is the underlying basis for the compositions of the double image paintings, the characters acting out the scenes within the larger composition (of a face or a skull) are unaware of the bigger picture, yet molded and influenced by it, and visa versa — both a separate, yet integral part of the other's existence," wrote French in his artist statement for the show. "Duality" opens August 31 at C.A.V.E. Gallery in Venice and will be on view through September 21. See more after the jump.
