Captivating Hand-Cut Paper Sculptures by Rogan Brown

Fascinated by natural forms and scientific illustrations, Rogan Brown began making paper sculptures that imitated ocean gyres and geological formations, but recently has shifted the focus to abstract, floral forms cut from layers of paper with impeccable detail and precision. “For me nature is not sentimental or picturesque, it is rather the Kantian sublime, beautiful and terrifying… I wanted to introduce a more sensual, sexual quality, think Venus Flytrap or Georgia O’Keefe paintings,” Brown wrote. Brown says that detailed scientific observations precede the creation of each piece; for the artist, each work is an homage to the complexity of the natural world.
