Nigel Cooke’s Paintings of Surreal Forests

by Nastia VoynovskayaPosted on

British painter Nigel Cooke creates melancholic, Earth-toned worlds muddied by abstract paint strokes. His bearded protagonists appear dejected with their downward glances, hiding behind overgrown facial hair in a way that seems at once tragic and comical. Cooke’s cool-colored, sweeping brushstrokes create an ambiance evocative of a mossy, shady forest — a place of solitude and escape sometimes interrupted by mysterious floating heads and giant spiderwebs that hint at some strange magic at work. Take a look at some of his works below, images courtesy of Nigel Cooke.
