Revealing Gray Scale Paintings by Artist Zhang Haiying

by Jane KenoyerPosted on

Chinese artist Zhang Haiying‘s gray scale paintings in his Action Figures Series were created to reveal issues surrounding Chinese prostitution, pornography, and inequality that is prevalent in the vulnerable regions of Chinese society. The degraded and objectified women and young girls are painted with their faces hidden from the viewer. These shamed figures are depicted in strip clubs and other seedy establishments and show signs of physical abuse. The large scale paintings are meant to trigger a discourse regarding these sensitive social issues while the artist remains politically neutral.
